Sony to Revive WH-1000XM4 in 2026: Budget Version of Legendary Headphones Gets 'C' Suffix

Sony is preparing an unexpected return to one of its most successful headphone models. According to insider Roland Quandt, the company will release an updated version of the WH-1000XM4 in 2026, positioned as a more affordable alternative to the current flagship lineup.

This is not a restyling but the creation of a separate modification with a Lite, Neo, or Eco prefix in the name. Quandt, known for his accurate industry predictions, shared this on his Bluesky account. According to him, the new headphones will differ from existing WH-1000XM4 models by having the letter 'C' at the end of the SKU.

The move looks surprising against the backdrop of active updates to the current lineup. Over the past year alone, Sony refreshed the WH-1000XM6 three times, introducing the sixth generation in May 2025 and then releasing versions in Sand Pink, Sandstone, and Olive Grey. Additionally, the 1000X The ColleXion series went on sale the same May and currently costs around $648 on Amazon.

The name alone suggests a price below the standard $349 for the regular WH-1000XM4. However, Quandt has not yet revealed the exact cost or the announcement date for the updated headphones. Technical specifications also remain unknown — they are expected to stay close to the original, but with changes that would reduce production costs.

The WH-1000XM4, released in 2020, are still considered among the best noise-cancelling headphones in their class. Their return in a budget version could be Sony's response to growing competition in the mid-price segment, where Chinese brands are actively operating. At the same time, the company apparently does not plan to abandon its premium lineup entirely but is merely expanding its range with a more affordable option.

It remains a mystery what exact changes will be made to the design and internals of the WH-1000XM4 to achieve a lower price. This could involve a simplified version with fewer features or the use of cheaper materials. Either way, the news has already sparked lively discussion among brand fans who hope the signature sound quality and noise cancellation will be preserved.
