Lucid reveals $50,000 Cosmos SUV — Model Y rival now due in 2027

Lucid has released the first official images of its most affordable electric vehicle, the mid-size Cosmos crossover, designed to take on the Tesla Model Y. Priced at around $50,000, the model is seen as crucial to the startup's long-term stability. However, production has been pushed back from late 2026 to early 2027, with volume output expected in the second half of the year.

The photos surfaced in the company's latest earnings report, though the car's design was previously known only through patent drawings. The crossover features a sloping roofline typical of coupe-style SUVs, similar to the BMW X4. At the rear, there are two horizontal LED taillights and a wide third brake light positioned at the bottom of the rear windshield — an unusual placement caused by the nearly horizontal glass, which could affect visibility.

Up front, the headlights are extremely compact, with all beams integrated into a single ultra-slim housing. Inside, a very wide screen enclosure is visible in one of the images; the company has previously confirmed the Cosmos will come with a single curved ultra-wide display. Production is planned at the unfinished AMP-2 plant in Saudi Arabia.

Lucid CEO Silvio Napoli said the company will not repeat the mistakes made with the Air and Gravity launches, both of which suffered from software issues. "The mid-size will launch only when every process and quality requirement has been met," he stated. Management is deliberately avoiding a rushed rollout of the critical model to prevent costly failures down the road.
