Daily kefir lowers fasting glucose and zonulin — what happens to your gut

Drinking kefir every day may do more than improve digestion — it can also affect blood glucose levels and strengthen the intestinal barrier. As interest in fermented foods and gut microbiota grows, this traditional beverage is back in the spotlight of researchers.
Kefir is made from milk using "kefir grains" — symbiotic colonies of bacteria and yeast. A single glass provides a notable amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and vitamins A and B12. The real value, however, lies in the live microorganisms that drive most of the drink's health benefits.
The beverage contains dozens of probiotic strains, including lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, and Streptococcus, along with yeast. These support microbial balance, reduce inflammation in the gut, and stimulate the production of short-chain fatty acids — compounds that feed the mucosal lining and reinforce the intestinal barrier.
Regular consumption of kefir has been linked to lower levels of zonulin, a protein associated with increased intestinal permeability. The lower the zonulin concentration, the better the barrier function, which reduces the risk of unwanted molecules leaking from the gut into the bloodstream.
Kefir may also help gently stabilize glucose levels, particularly in people with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes. In small studies, participants who regularly included the drink in their diet showed reduced fasting glucose and insulin levels compared with a control group.
