GTA V quarterly sales slump to under a million as GTA VI pre-orders hit 'unprecedented' levels

Take-Two Interactive's first-quarter report for fiscal 2027 revealed a mixed picture: while GTA VI is seeing an "unprecedented" level of pre-orders, its predecessor has sharply lost momentum. As of June 30, lifetime sales of GTA V surpassed 230 million copies, but the game added fewer than a million units over the past three months — a notable slowdown from its usual pace.
The entire Grand Theft Auto series sold nearly 475 million copies in total, growing by roughly 5 million during the quarter. The Red Dead Redemption duology has reached 116 million units sold, with Red Dead Redemption 2 accounting for 87 million of that figure.
The quarter's clear highlight was basketball sim NBA 2K26, which moved 12 million copies — 9% more than its predecessor, a result the company called "outstanding." Revenue from GTA Online microtransactions also grew by 3%.
The holding's financials were strong: quarterly revenue hit $1.53 billion, with net bookings of $1.39 billion, driven mainly by the GTA and NBA 2K franchises. CEO Strauss Zelnick attributed the results to the strength of the portfolio and disciplined execution across all brands.
The full-year fiscal 2027 revenue forecast remains unchanged at $8–8.2 billion, up 20% year over year. The company's biggest bet is still on GTA VI, which remains scheduled for a November 19 release.
