1666: Amsterdam enters Steam Early Access — hunt monsters hiding among people

The developers of the dark action game 1666: Amsterdam have revealed the Steam Early Access launch date. The project, created by one of the original Assassin's Creed authors, will take players to 17th-century Holland, where they will track down monsters disguised as ordinary city residents.
The game was announced several years ago and has since changed both its name and concept. Originally positioned as a story-driven action title, the project later shifted focus toward cooperative monster hunting. In Early Access, players will be able to try core mechanics, including exploring Amsterdam, searching for clues, and fighting creatures of darkness.
The action takes place in 1666, when the city is suffering from a plague epidemic. Amid this chaos, supernatural beings that feed on fear and death hide among people. The protagonist must figure out which townsfolk are actually monsters and eliminate the threat without drawing undue attention.
The game's creator has noted that he drew inspiration from the works of Carol Reed and other noir classics. An atmosphere of hopelessness and constant tension is meant to be the project's defining feature. The authors also promise a deep investigation system where every decision could lead to unpredictable consequences.
Early Access begins next month. The Steam version will include a significant portion of the main story as well as several side quests. The full release is planned after developers collect player feedback and refine difficulty balance and performance.
No specific date for leaving Early Access has been announced yet. However, the creators assure that post-launch support will continue — plans include adding new regions to explore and new types of monsters.
Players can hunt solo or with friends. The cooperative mode supports up to four players who can team up for shared objectives or operate independently. The developers emphasize that each approach to progression will have its own advantages and challenges.
