WoW players report disconnected friends' characters keep fighting on their own after patch 12.1

Disconnects are an unpleasant fact of life in any MMO, and if you've played World of Warcraft long enough, you start to recognize the telltale signs that one of your adventuring companions has hit a network snag. They might simply freeze mid-combat. If they were moving when the connection dropped, their character could run straight into a wall or get caught in a brief loop of stuttery motion until the server gives up and logs them out.

Since the 12.1 patch for WoW: Midnight went live, however, players have been reporting something far more unsettling from their disconnected comrades. Instead of the expected unresponsiveness, these characters appear to start moving and fighting on their own — as if someone else had taken over the keyboard.

The clearest example so far comes courtesy of Redditor Stuperstrong, who shared a YouTube video on the WoW subreddit showing their Evoker friend disconnecting mid-encounter. In the clip, you can see the dragon-winged Evoker display all the classic signs of a connection drop on the left side of the screen at around the 39-second mark — and then, moments later, they resume fighting as if nothing happened.

The footage is genuinely eerie. Speaking as someone who has played WoW on and off for over two decades, there's something instinctively wrong about watching a player character perform actions when every visual cue tells you the person behind them is no longer there. The movements are smooth, deliberate, and combat-appropriate — not the stuttering puppet behavior you'd expect from a ghosted client.

Whether this is a bug introduced by patch 12.1, a server-side quirk, or something else entirely remains unclear. Blizzard has not yet commented on the reports. Players continue to share their own encounters with these autonomous characters, trying to figure out what's really going on when the connection drops — and who, or what, is playing the game when the player isn't.
