Walmart opens 100th fast-charging station, 400 kW per plug — but most EVs can't use it yet

Walmart has reached a milestone in its electric vehicle charging network: the 100th company-owned fast-charging site is now open. The network spans 100 stores across 20 U.S. states.

The milestone station is located at the Walmart Supercenter in Monument, Colorado. It features eight charging plugs — four CCS1 and four NACS — capable of delivering up to 400 kW. However, most current EVs cannot accept the full 400 kW output.

"Reaching 100 sites is an important milestone, and our broad footprint positions us to make EV charging more accessible for communities while expanding the ways we serve our customers," said Shayne Wahlmeier, senior vice president of Walmart Energy.

Most Walmart charging sites have between eight and 16 plugs, split between CCS1 and NACS. The Monument station's eight-plug configuration is typical for the network's smaller locations.

Walmart uses 400 kW chargers from Switzerland-based ABB E-mobility and Italian manufacturer Alpitronic. The specific hardware models are ABB's A400 All-in-One and Alpitronic's HYC400 Hypercharger. The Monument site is equipped with ABB hardware.

According to ABB, the A400 can supply 200 kW to two EVs simultaneously or deliver the full 400 kW to a single vehicle. Alpitronic's units work similarly: one charger has both a CCS1 and a NACS cable and can serve two stalls. At an early Walmart site in McKinney, Texas, a test by InsideEVs showed a GMC Hummer EV pulling more than 300 kW, charging from 1% to 53% in 27 minutes.

Walmart develops its own software for the charging network, purchasing only the hardware. The company's proprietary software platform manages the stations, handles payments, and monitors performance. Walmart has not disclosed the total number of planned charging stations, but the company has previously stated its goal to build a coast-to-coast charging network. The expansion continues as Walmart adds more locations, aiming to make EV charging more accessible in underserved areas.
