This rugged smartwatch runs for 15 months on a single battery — and it's not a gimmick

A ZDNET journalist who tested dozens of rugged smartwatches named the Suunto Core 2 the undisputed leader in battery life. The device runs for up to 15 months on a single CR2032 coin cell battery, putting it far ahead of competitors that require weekly or even daily charging.
The watch packs an altimeter, barometer, and compass — the essential trio for outdoor enthusiasts. However, it deliberately omits power-hungry features like GPS navigation, smartphone notifications, or a heart rate monitor. The absence of these components is the main reason behind the record-breaking battery life.
The case is made of composite material, and the watch is built to withstand shocks and water immersion. The display is monochrome with a backlight, further reducing power draw. Suunto positions the Core 2 as a tool for hikers, climbers, and anyone who spends extended periods away from civilization and doesn't want to worry about charging their gadget.
The review highlights that replacing the battery takes just a few minutes and requires no special skills. The manufacturer claims the cell lasts the stated 15 months with moderate use — turning on the backlight and sensors only when needed. In continuous altimeter or barometer mode, battery life drops but still remains an order of magnitude higher than that of typical smartwatches.
The Suunto Core 2 is also praised for its readability in direct sunlight, thanks to the transflective LCD technology. The buttons are large and tactile, making operation easy even with gloves or wet hands. The watch is available in several color options and costs around $200, which is comparable to many basic fitness trackers but offers vastly superior durability and battery performance.
