Tesla launches first large-scale dry cathode production in the US, cutting costs and supply chain risks

Tesla North America has announced the start of large-scale production of cathode material for lithium-ion batteries at its facility in Austin, Texas. According to the company, this is the only manufacturing plant of such scale in the Americas that uses the dry process technology.
The key innovation is the elimination of traditional wet processes, which typically require large amounts of water, energy, and solvents. The dry method reduces resource consumption, lowers production costs, and potentially allows for faster scaling of output. The technology is integrated into the production chain for 4680 battery cells, which are designed to deliver high energy density.
The resulting battery cells are intended for use not only in Tesla electric vehicles but also in the company's Megapack energy storage systems. By producing cathodes in-house, Tesla strengthens its vertical integration strategy and reduces reliance on external suppliers. This move is particularly significant as demand for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage continues to grow, and the company aims to control more stages of battery production directly in North America.
