Tailscale has finally revealed what caused a series of service disruptions last year: a deeply buried bug in SQLite that had gone unnoticed for 16 years.

The issue manifested as intermittent instability across the service, but engineers struggled to pinpoint the source for a long time. The faulty code had remained untouched for nearly two decades and only triggered under specific conditions, making it extremely difficult to reproduce and diagnose.

According to the company, the root cause lay in how SQLite — the widely used embedded database — handled certain data operations. The defect was dormant in the codebase for years before it began causing visible outages.

Tailscale did not go into exhaustive technical detail, but confirmed that the problem has now been resolved. Instead of waiting for an upstream fix from the SQLite development team, the company's engineers devised a workaround that neutralizes the bug in their own stack.
