Opera finally adds vertical tabs with the simplest mode switching yet

After years of user requests, Opera has finally introduced vertical tabs. The implementation is easier to use than most other browsers, and switching between vertical and horizontal layouts has been made as simple as possible.

The ZDNET reviewer, who has used Opera for over a decade, says the feature has become essential for daily work. The browser already offers workspaces, split screen, and a flexible theming engine. Vertical tabs, however, had been missing all along, even though other browsers like Vivaldi and even Firefox added them earlier.

The problem with horizontal tabs becomes obvious with many open pages. The author currently has 36 tabs open, which is considered a low number. In horizontal mode, labels become so narrow that finding the right page requires guesswork or cycling through tabs with keyboard shortcuts. Vertical tabs display full titles, so the desired page is found instantly — just read the name and click.

Opera added the feature with its own take on convenience. If the browser runs in the default configuration, tabs sit horizontally at the top of the window. To switch to vertical mode, right-click any open tab and select the appropriate option from the context menu.

The key advantage of Opera's implementation is how easy it is to toggle between the two modes. Users can return to horizontal tabs or switch back to vertical at any time without diving into settings or restarting the browser. This approach sets the new feature apart from similar solutions in other browsers, where changing orientation often requires extra steps.

For those accustomed to working with many open pages, vertical tabs have become a deciding factor in choosing a browser. The author admits they now ignore any browser without this capability, regardless of speed, appearance, or other strengths. Opera has finally closed that gap, making tab management even more convenient.
