Stripe beats Databricks to buy OpenRouter for $7 billion — founders get more than the whole startup was worth in May

Stripe has acquired OpenRouter, an AI startup that routes requests between different language models, for $7 billion. The payment giant had to compete with other bidders, including Databricks, to secure the deal.

The final price tag is a massive leap from OpenRouter's $1.3 billion valuation in May. Remarkably, the startup's founders alone will receive $1.5 billion from the sale — more than the entire company was valued at just three months ago. Investors will get the remaining $6 billion.

When asked why a payment company would want a startup that essentially acts as a middleware for AI models, Stripe's founders gave a cryptic answer. They referred to January 1 as the start of the "singularity" — a term describing the point where humans and technology merge into a new form. Co-founder Patrick Collison acknowledged the term was used jokingly at Stripe's conference in April.

The real reason, however, is economic. AI is driving a surge in new company launches, and many of these startups use Stripe's payment infrastructure. The company claims that 88% of the companies on the Forbes AI 50 list — including OpenAI and Anthropic — are its customers, as well as 100% of the fastest-growing startups according to Brex.

OpenRouter's CEO Alex Atallah previously described his company as "Stripe for AI," providing a unified access point to various AI systems and preventing vendor lock-in. The startup reported having 8 million users worldwide. The acquisition gives Stripe direct access to this user base and positions it at the center of the AI ecosystem, where every transaction — whether it's a query to GPT-4 or an image generation on Midjourney — can be processed through its payment network.
