Sony warns on PS5 boxes that disc games end in January 2028

PlayStation 5 console packaging now carries a notice that new games for the platform will be released only in digital form starting in January 2028. Shoppers spotted the stickers and shared images on social media, including the account Behind the Games.

The warning states that from that date, new PlayStation game releases will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital format. Discs released before January 2028 will remain compatible with the console. The label appears on both the disc and digital editions of the PS5.

The wording matches the explanation given in the company's July blog post. Sony plans to stop printing new games on Blu-ray in early 2028. Some older titles will still ship on discs depending on demand, the company said.

The decision has long frustrated gamers, who have flooded Sony's social media accounts with complaints. The protests have not changed the push toward digital. At a recent investor Q&A, Sony CFO Lin Tao broke her silence, suggesting that potential profits outweigh temporary customer dissatisfaction.

The company cites statistics showing that buyers overwhelmingly prefer digital games. Organizers of the Don't Kill the Disc petition argue that these numbers include titles never released in physical form. They also note that PS5 consoles with optical drives remain popular.

Estimates suggest around 75% of consumers have opted against the digital-only version of the system. Sony produced more disc-based PS5 models earlier in the current generation. Still, many gamers continue to choose consoles that support physical media.

The warning sticker may be an attempt to avoid lawsuits. But it is unlikely to deter consumer advocates who already view the PlayStation Store as a monopoly. A Dutch group recently filed legal action, arguing that without competition, prices will rise. As physical games disappear from retailers, concerns about Sony's dominance are only expected to grow.
