Rivian’s most-requested R1S feature arrives with 2027 model year

Rivian is preparing its transition from the 2026 to the 2027 model year, and the electric vehicle maker has decided to borrow a trick from its recently launched R2 SUV for the larger, more expensive R1 lineup. The changes are not sweeping — the R1 received a major refresh in 2024, which brought the R1S SUV and R1T pickup comprehensive re-engineering with new powertrain options, a fresh electronic architecture, and updated batteries.

The headline addition is captain's chairs for the second row of the R1S. According to the company, this was the single most requested feature from R1S customers. The new six-seat layout is offered as an alternative to the traditional three-place bench. Rivian's take on the captain's chair looks thoughtfully designed, including a hidden cupholder that the automaker says is unlike anything seen on other SUVs. The chairs are also spaced so that passengers can easily reach the third row, or use the gap between them to store skis, snowboards, or surfboards.

Rivian has also restructured its trim levels to align with the offering on the R2. Instead of choosing between Dual, Tri, and R1S configurations, buyers will now pick from Premium and Performance trims, while the Quad option remains unchanged. Notably, base pricing stays the same: the R1T still starts at $79,990, and the R1S at $83,990. The updates aim to simplify the buying process and bring the R1 line in line with the company's newer product strategy.
