After 25 Chinese Cars, a Journalist Picks 6 — Zeekr Mix Beats Audi and BMW Inside

An American journalist who has driven more than 25 Chinese cars over the past few years has compiled a list of six models he would happily park in his own garage. In his view, tariffs and technology bans are keeping U.S. buyers from a significant slice of the global auto industry, and that is a real loss.

The standout discovery is the Zeekr Mix electric minivan. The author calls it the polar opposite of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, whose U.S. launch he considers disappointing. The ID. Buzz, he says, has a not-so-clever infotainment system, a mediocre interior, and misses key features like second-row cup holders, all at a steep price.

The Zeekr Mix, by contrast, offers three sliding doors and one forward-hinged door, plus a fully pillarless body with an open-air feel. Inside, there are swiveling seats, a motorized center console with an optional table, and finishes the author ranks above luxury brands like Audi or BMW. He admits he never thought low-slung sedans or large ostentatious SUVs were the ideal form for true luxury, but the Mix changed his mind, feeling like a premium product built for relaxation and entertainment on the move.

Every car on the list except the Zeekr Mix is already sold outside China or has plans to be. The author notes that China's market is wildly diverse, ranging from cheap small hatchbacks to EVs with power rivaling hypercars. The six picks, he says, are the best-executed vehicles in their classes, and he would not mind seeing them in his driveway every day.
