OpenAI hits $40B annualized revenue, nearly doubling in months

As a private company, OpenAI is not required to disclose its financials on a regular basis the way public companies do. Until a potential IPO, outside observers can only gauge the startup's performance through indirect signals. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, OpenAI's annualized revenue has now surpassed $40 billion — nearly double the figure reported at the end of last year.
The pace of revenue growth has accelerated in recent months, the agency's sources say. The company has been pushing specialized developer tools to corporate clients more aggressively, which has proven to be a significant revenue driver. Subscription income and advertising revenue have also grown, and the consumer segment continues to contribute to overall gains.
Demand for AI agents has surged, particularly Codex, designed for software development, and ChatGPT Work, which automates business workflows. Lower prices for access to some of OpenAI's AI models have also helped attract additional customers. By comparison, rival Anthropic reported $47 billion in annualized revenue back in May, but has not updated that figure since, as regulations bar such statements while the company prepares for an IPO expected in September or October.
The appointment of a new chief revenue officer at OpenAI suggests management is focused on strengthening financial performance. In July, OpenAI president Greg Brockman acknowledged that annualized revenue had grown by more than 20% month over month.
