Alibaba Cloud deploys AI to cut data center energy use

Chinese cloud provider Alibaba Cloud has started using artificial intelligence to optimize its own infrastructure operations. The focus is on reducing energy consumption at data centers, which traditionally require massive amounts of electricity for cooling and server maintenance.
The AI-based system analyzes equipment load in real time and automatically adjusts cooling parameters and computing power distribution. This reduces energy use without hurting performance, which matters as demand for cloud services and large language model training continues to grow.
The company says the move is part of a broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality. Alibaba Cloud has spent years investing in green technologies, including renewable energy sourcing and hardware efficiency improvements. According to developers, the new AI-driven approach delivers tangible results: some clusters have seen energy consumption drop by double-digit percentages.
Notably, the technology designed to save resources also requires computing power to run itself. However, engineers emphasize that the gains from optimization far outweigh the cost of operating the AI system. The algorithms are trained on historical load and weather data, allowing them to predict consumption peaks and adapt infrastructure in advance.
Industry experts link Alibaba Cloud's interest in such developments to a global trend: major tech firms, including Google and Microsoft, are also actively deploying AI to manage their data centers. For Alibaba, this is also a way to strengthen its position in the domestic market, where competition with Huawei Cloud and Tencent Cloud remains intense.
The new system is currently running in a test mode across a portion of the company's facilities in China. Alibaba Cloud plans to scale the solution to all its data centers worldwide, including sites in Asia and Europe. Exact timelines for full deployment have not been disclosed, but the company says preliminary results already point to the project's success.
