Nintendo took down 401 GitHub repos targeting Switch emulators — Suyu, Yuzu forks, and Skyline hit

Nintendo has sent seven DMCA takedown notices to GitHub targeting repositories that facilitate circumvention of its technical protection measures. As a result, the platform has blocked 401 repositories. The affected projects include copies of the Suyu emulator, as well as forks of Yuzu and Skyline.
The primary target of the Japanese company was Suyu, which is associated with a network comprising over 100 repositories. GitHub processed the takedown notices regarding the entire network, covering 311 repositories. The remaining notices targeted individual repositories and networks of several dozen repositories, including the independent Skyline emulator.
Nintendo stated that the flagged repositories "offer, provide links to or otherwise provide access to" emulators for the Nintendo Switch console. The company emphasized that such software illegally bypasses Nintendo's TPM modules to run unauthorized copies of Switch games. Games for the console are encrypted using proprietary cryptographic keys, known as prod.keys, which protect against unauthorized access and copying. During operation, emulators inevitably use unauthorized copies of these keys to decrypt Switch games during or before their launch without Nintendo's permission.
Nintendo further argued that the targeted emulators are primarily designed to circumvent technological measures that effectively control access to copyrighted works under the DMCA. The distribution of these emulators constitutes illegal trafficking in technologies that are primarily designed to circumvent technological protection measures. The company has previously taken similar legal action against other emulator projects, including a successful lawsuit against the creators of the Yuzu emulator, which led to a $2.4 million settlement and the shutdown of the project.
