After two years of torture-testing 351 microSD cards, one enthusiast reveals which brands survive the longest

Tech enthusiast Matt Cole began a microSD endurance project in 2023 and has since put 351 memory cards from 52 brands through relentless write, verify, and erase cycles. The test covers 111 distinct models. To date, 177 cards have failed outright, become read-only, or developed verification errors on more than half of their sectors. 107 cards are still running, and 67 are waiting for an available card reader slot.

Cole's setup is designed to wear cards out as fast as possible — it does not reflect typical usage in a smartphone, camera, or handheld gaming device. Instead, cards are cycled continuously until they can no longer reliably write or retain data. The project is therefore a comparison of endurance under sustained stress, not a prediction of normal lifespan.

Cole categorizes the cards into three groups: consumer (standard retail models), high-endurance (marketed for devices that write data frequently), and industrial (built for heavy-duty use, often with published endurance ratings). The average consumer card in the test lasted about 10,000 program/verify/erase cycles. The five strongest consumer brands, ranked by endurance, are PNY, Kingston, Delkin Devices, Lexar, and Samsung.

Notably, Amazon Basics cards have not failed a single time throughout the entire project. They have been running for 788 days, completed 16,600 cycles, and written a combined 4.2 petabytes of data. Cole deliberately kept them out of the main ranking. He recently shared a detailed update on Reddit's r/DataHoarder community, where he also noted that the test is ongoing and that new cards are still being added to the rotation.
