Netflix cancels David Fincher's American Squid Game remake

Netflix has pulled the plug on the American version of "Squid Game," which was to be directed by David Fincher. The project, first announced back in 2023, was slated for a 2026 production start, but the streaming service decided to shut it down after several years of development.

According to insiders, the cancellation stems from personnel changes within Netflix. Instead of building a strategy around the U.S. spinoff, the company may now focus on creating localized adaptations of the show for individual international markets. Details on which regions could get their own versions have not been disclosed.

The original series, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, concluded in 2025 after three seasons. The franchise also continues through the reality competition show "Squid Game: The Challenge," which has aired on the platform.

Earlier reports indicated that the remake was set to take place in the United States, with Fincher, known for "Seven" and "Fight Club," attached as both director and producer. The exact reasons behind the cancellation have not been revealed, though insiders note the decision came after an extended preparation period.
