Netflix 4K on Chrome: what you need to stream in ultra HD on a PC

To watch Netflix in 4K through the Chrome browser, you need a Premium subscription, as the Standard and ad-supported plans do not support ultra-high definition streaming. Previously, 4K streaming in a browser was only available via Microsoft Edge or the native Windows app, but Netflix now officially supports Chrome — though only for PC users. Mac users must use Safari instead.

The most obvious requirement is a display with a 4K resolution. Most monitors are 1080p or 1440p, so they won't take full advantage of 4K streaming. Even if you have a suitable screen, you also need HDCP 2.2 support, a digital copy protection protocol that prevents unauthorized copying of 4K video. This requirement applies not only to the monitor itself but also to your computer's video output. If you're connecting your PC to an external 4K monitor or a TV, both the display and the specific port on your graphics card must support HDCP 2.2.

Your operating system must support the HEVC codec. While macOS already includes it, Windows users may need to install a corresponding extension. The processor and graphics card must be powerful enough to decode 4K streams. Netflix recommends an Intel Core 7th generation or newer processor, along with a graphics card that supports hardware HEVC decoding.

Internet speed must be at least 25 Mbps for stable 4K streaming. Even if all technical requirements are met, actual quality may vary depending on network load and server-side conditions.

Additionally, if you are using a laptop, ensure that it is plugged into a power outlet, as some laptops may throttle performance on battery, which could affect 4K playback. It is also worth noting that even with a Premium subscription, not all content on Netflix is available in 4K — only titles marked with the Ultra HD badge will stream at that resolution. The same HDCP 2.2 requirements apply to external displays connected via HDMI or DisplayPort, so older monitors or cables may not be compatible. For the best experience, Netflix also recommends using the latest version of Chrome and keeping your graphics drivers up to date.
