Marvel’s Wolverine is Insomniac’s first game to run at 60FPS with ray tracing by default

Insomniac Games has shared new details about Marvel's Wolverine in an interview with IGN. The game will be the studio's first title to run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled even on the base PlayStation 5 console. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac, explained that previously the performance mode with ray tracing was added at the last minute, but for this project the team decided to build the entire experience around that target from the start. He noted that this is the first time such a mode is the default for one of their games, calling it important for the presentation.

Fitzgerald also drew a contrast with Marvel's Spider-Man, which was set in a single city. Wolverine is more of a nature-oriented character, and the game takes place in the wilderness of Canada and in Madripoor, among other locations. As a result, the studio invested heavily in foliage and jungles, making them all reactive to wind and characters. The protagonist's destructive nature will be on full display: most props in the game are destructible and react in physically accurate ways.

Beyond the technical side, Insomniac confirmed a couple of features aimed at replayability. Mission Replay lets players return to a previously completed mission to pick up missed collectibles. There is also a so-called Whiskey bot, though the studio did not elaborate on what it does. The game has not yet received a release date, but it is in development exclusively for PlayStation 5.
