Marathon loses 95% of Steam players in six months, Bungie faces uncertain future

Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon, released in March 2026, has lost over 95% of its Steam player base within six months. According to SteamDB, the game peaked at 88,337 concurrent players on launch day — a modest figure for a high-budget title. Daily active users now hover around 3,500.
The studio has been fighting to retain its audience: releasing major content updates, fixing bugs, hosting free weekends, offering discounts, and launching a full PvE mode. The third season is scheduled to start in late September. Yet none of these measures have reversed the decline.
Exact console numbers are unavailable, but of the slightly more than 2 million copies sold, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S shares are reportedly very low. This suggests console players are no more engaged than the PC audience.
Marathon's future looks increasingly bleak. Bungie has already cut 50% of its workforce, ended content support for its more popular title Destiny 2, and has no other projects in development. If the player count continues to fall, the fate of both the game and the studio may be sealed.
