Lenovo's Project Swan laptop expands into an ultrawide OLED workstation with dual motors

Lenovo is developing a new concept called Project Swan, a ThinkBook laptop with a flexible OLED display that extends sideways, turning a conventional clamshell into a portable ultrawide workstation. Leaked renders, published by Windows Latest, reveal a device with dual motors that push side rails outward, increasing the horizontal screen area on demand.
Unlike Lenovo's earlier commercial rollable laptop, which unfolded vertically, Project Swan targets those who need a widescreen layout. The images show a two-tone chassis with structural cutouts for the motorized mechanisms and a noticeably narrowed central hinge designed to stay clear of the expanding side channels. Two USB-C ports sit on the left side for connectivity and charging.
The concept is aimed at corporate users: executives, developers, and analysts who often work with multiple windows side by side while traveling—spreadsheets, code editors, or documents. Instead of carrying an external monitor with cables and a case, the user gets an expandable display built into the laptop itself, saving bag space and desk room.
Project Swan continues Lenovo's series of experiments with flexible panels. The company previously showcased the gaming-focused Legion Pro Rollable with a 21:9 screen and the vertically rolling ThinkPad Rollable XD. Bringing horizontal expansion to the ThinkBook family is a natural step toward making flexible displays a practical tool for everyday enterprise workflows.
Mass production of such a device still poses serious challenges. The dual-motor assembly adds internal complexity, weight, and more potential failure points, while the flexible OLED surface must endure repeated sliding cycles without creasing and keep dust and debris out of the track housings. Reliability questions remain open, and Lenovo may need to offer extended warranty coverage to reassure early adopters about the new technology.
