iPhone 17 Pro After a Year: Ceramic Shield 2 Impressed, But Heat Crept Back In

With the iPhone 18 Pro launch approaching, MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera looked back at nearly 12 months with the iPhone 17 Pro as his daily driver. His verdict: the Ceramic Shield 2 front glass was the best upgrade Apple made this year.

Apple promised improved scratch resistance, and in practice that claim held up. Barbera used the phone caseless, and after a full year the display shows only faint scratches — a stark contrast to his iPhone 16 Pro, which picked up visible marks within three weeks. The handset also survived multiple face-down drops without cracking, though the aluminum frame collected a few chips along the edges. Reports of the orange finish fading over time didn't match his experience; the color held up fine.

Battery life was another standout. The iPhone 17 Pro consistently lasted through a full day of heavy use, a feat normally reserved for the larger Pro Max models. That endurance is exactly why Barbera chose the smaller 17 Pro over the 17 Pro Max — it simply outlasted his previous 16 Pro.

The new vapor chamber cooling kept the phone noticeably cooler than older iPhones for most of the year. However, in the final stretch of his testing, the device started running hotter, with minor performance dips. Barbera suspects battery degradation or accumulated thermal stress as the likely culprits, but notes that early thermals were excellent.

The Capture Button proved handy for quick photo access, though Barbera admits he often forgot it was there — a nice extra rather than an essential feature. Camera quality remained strong overall, but there were no dramatic leaps over the previous generation. The iPhone 17 Pro, he concludes, is a solid all-rounder that aged well in most areas, with the glass and battery as the clear highlights and heat management slightly fading late in its life cycle.
