HyperX’s first open-back gaming headset costs $150 and keeps the bass punch

HyperX has unveiled its first-ever open-back gaming headset, the Cloud Alpha Air, priced at $150. The company, known for over a decade of gaming accessories, has finally entered the open-back category, aiming to address the typical bass loss associated with airy soundstages.
The Cloud Alpha Air features plush foam earpads and a proprietary Bass Tube design that HyperX claims delivers the same low-end response as closed-back headphones. The goal is to help gamers pick up on subtle sound effects like footsteps and explosions without sacrificing the immersive rumble. During a brief hands-on session, the headset reportedly produced a "satisfying and controlled deep rumble" that enhanced low tones in shooters, though it's unclear if it provides a significant competitive advantage over similarly priced rivals.
The headphones have an impedance of 34 ohms, which is relatively low. However, when connected to a PC via a standard 3.5mm audio cable, overall volume was slightly subdued. Discerning audiophiles may want to use HyperX's included USB adapter or rely on their own amplifier for optimal performance. The Cloud Alpha Air is available now, marking HyperX's first step into the open-back gaming headset market.
