Heavy Rain hits all-time low of $0.99 on Steam — 95% off until August 17

Quantic Dream's interactive thriller Heavy Rain has dropped below one dollar on Steam for the first time. Until August 17, the game costs $0.99 instead of the regular $19.99, a 95% discount. According to SteamDB, the previous largest price cut was 90%, making this sale a new record for the title.

The story of Heavy Rain revolves around the hunt for the Origami Killer, a cold-blooded serial abductor of children who leaves only a paper figure at each crime scene. Players follow the narrative from the perspectives of four characters: desperate father Ethan Mars, FBI profiler Norman Jayden, private investigator Scott Shelby, and journalist Madison Paige. Their separate storylines gradually intertwine as the plot progresses.

In terms of gameplay, Heavy Rain plays more like an interactive crime drama than a traditional adventure. Players explore environments, examine crime scenes, gather clues, and engage in conversations with multiple dialogue options. Action sequences, fights, and chases are mostly handled through quick-time events. A key twist is that mistakes rarely trigger a classic game-over screen — instead, the story moves forward, and failed actions can permanently kill off main characters. This results in numerous branching paths and several possible endings.

Heavy Rain originally launched exclusively on PlayStation 3 in 2010. Six years later, Quantic Dream brought the thriller to PlayStation 4, and PC players finally joined the hunt for the Origami Killer in 2019. German magazine PC Games reviewed the PC version at the time and gave it 8 out of 10 points, praising the gripping story, well-written characters, and decisions that noticeably shape the plot. The dark atmosphere and strong presentation were also highlighted. However, the review criticized the rather minimalist gameplay and occasionally clunky controls. Toward the end, several plot holes become apparent, and the finale, according to the reviewers, fails to resolve all the story threads set up earlier.

Metacritic lists Heavy Rain with a Metascore of 87 and a User Score of 8.4. The Steam community is similarly positive: 85% of over 30,000 user reviews recommend the game.
