Fuyao Glass starts mass production of solar sunroofs — BYD Han and Tang get a $1,190 option with 720W peak power

Fuyao Glass, the world's largest automotive glass manufacturer, has confirmed it is ready for mass production of panoramic sunroofs with integrated photovoltaic cells. The technology, described by the company as a "solar sunroof" rather than a full-roof photovoltaic system, is designed to generate electricity for powering auxiliary systems in electric vehicles.
According to the company, the photovoltaic cells are embedded into multilayer glass. Earlier reports indicated that the technology would be used in BYD models. Since February, several Chinese automotive media outlets have reported that the system was developed in partnership with BYD and will be offered as an optional upgrade for the Han and Tang models at a price of $1,190.
Leaked specifications suggest the system achieves a peak power output of 720 W and a conversion efficiency of 23.18%, based on heterojunction (HJT) solar cell technology. However, neither Fuyao nor BYD has published official technical details, citing the information as a trade secret.
Fuyao Glass first informed investors in May 2024 that it had reached the capability for mass production of solar glass for sunroofs. The latest announcements appear to indicate progress toward commercialization rather than a final completion of the technology itself.
The company also stated that its factories in Fuqing Yangxia and Hefei had reached a production capacity of 3 million automotive glass sets by the end of 2025, with further expansion planned for 2026. Fuyao did not disclose what portion of this capacity will be allocated to solar sunroofs.
