Ford's $30,000 Fathom EV pickup revealed — but key specs still unknown after a year

Ford has confirmed that its upcoming midsize electric pickup will be called Fathom and priced just under $30,000. The announcement came a year after the company first teased an affordable EV, yet crucial specifications remain undisclosed.

Ford initially revealed plans for a budget electric pickup in August 2025, promising a launch within a couple of years at a price below $30,000. Since then, the automaker has held at least three major events and announcements tied to the project, including a press tour of the development facility.

However, disclosed details are limited to a handful of features. The Fathom will include native Apple Maps support, a standard touchscreen, BlueCruise hardware, and a 400-volt architecture. Ford also says the cabin will offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4. The truck is slated to arrive in late 2027, assuming timelines hold.

The most important specifications remain under wraps. Ford has not revealed range figures for either battery option, whether more than two packs will be offered, towing capacity, power output, pricing for options such as all-wheel drive, or whether physical buttons will accompany the touchscreen. The exterior and interior design are also unknown — the only teaser is an artist's rendering, not the actual vehicle.

Ford's attempt to host an "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit likewise fell flat. Most top questions went unanswered, as the company saves details for a steady drip of bite-sized announcements.

This situation highlights a long-standing issue in the EV market: automakers announce vehicles far too early and risk losing hype by the time they actually arrive. Tesla pioneered this approach with the Model 3 and Cybertruck, both of which entered volume production much later than promised and at higher prices. Other manufacturers have been eager to follow that playbook.
