Dark mode pushes Lenovo OLED laptop battery from 9 to over 21 hours

Battery life on an OLED laptop depends not just on screen brightness but also on what is displayed. Unlike LCD panels, where the backlight draws power regardless of the image, OLED pixels emit light on their own. White areas demand significant energy, while black ones consume almost nothing, making dark mode a critical factor for endurance.

Notebookcheck verified this with the 15.3-inch Lenovo ThinkPad X9-15p Gen 1 Aura Edition, which sports a 2.8K (2880×1800) OLED panel. The device was tested in a Wi-Fi browsing scenario at maximum display brightness, with color scheme and refresh rate varied. The manufacturer ships the laptop at 60 Hz by default, but the screen supports up to 120 Hz and variable refresh rate (VRR) between 30 and 120 Hz.

The results were stark. In light mode, the laptop lasted just over nine hours — meaning endurance dropped by more than half compared to dark mode. Interestingly, VRR performed slightly better than a fixed 60 Hz in this setting, though the gap was small. In dark mode, the ThinkPad exceeded 21 hours in the same test, but only at 60 Hz — enabling VRR reduced runtime to just over 20 hours.

To get the longest possible battery life from an OLED laptop, combine dark mode with a 60 Hz refresh rate. The 30–120 Hz VRR will shave off some endurance, yet the loss is far smaller than switching to a light interface theme.
