Commodore brings back legendary TAC-2 joystick after 40 years — at half the price of the original

Commodore International is resuming production of the iconic TAC-2 game controller, also known as the "Totally Accurate Controller." Manufacturing of the legendary joystick restarts more than four decades after its debut, with pre-orders now open on the official commodore.net website.

The original TAC-2 hit the market in 1983, developed by Suncom Technologies, whose slogan "We Help Make Computers Friendly" paired neatly with Commodore's own "Welcome to the World of Friendly Computing." The joystick earned a reputation for its rugged microswitch-free build, arcade-style ball-top handle, and satisfyingly clicky dual fire buttons. These traits made it one of the most sought-after controllers of its era.

Due to scarcity, fully functional TAC-2 units now sell for over $100 on the secondary market. To make the legendary controller more accessible, Commodore has decided to release a faithful modern recreation. The new version will retail for half the price of a well-preserved original.

The revival of the TAC-2 continues Commodore's strategy built on two pillars — "retro" and "futurism." The company previously saw success with the Commodore 64 Ultimate reissue, which prompted it to bring the beloved joystick back into its ecosystem. Production of the new replica has already begun, and the company is officially returning the "king of controllers" to the front lines of gaming accessories.
