Comcast’s Xfinity Shield turns your home Wi-Fi into a motion detector

Comcast has unveiled a new home security platform called Xfinity Shield, designed to bring together home, family, and cybersecurity protection in a single app. The company puts Wi-Fi at the center of this new offering.
For Xfinity Internet subscribers, the service called Wi-Fi Shield is available at no extra cost. It includes a feature named Wi-Fi Motion, which uses the intelligence built into the Xfinity Gateway to detect movement inside the home. The system works by monitoring changes in the radio frequency signal between the router and connected devices — the average Xfinity customer has 36 devices on their network. If the system detects unexpected changes, users receive an immediate notification through the Xfinity app.
Comcast emphasizes that Wi-Fi Motion is opt-in and does not record video, capture images, or identify individuals. The company describes it as "an added layer of awareness." While the underlying technology is not entirely new, it is notable to see a major internet provider integrate it into a home security platform.
Wi-Fi Shield also includes a cybersecurity component to protect connected devices from malware, phishing, and other threats. Additionally, Family Settings are now integrated into the same app, allowing users to create profiles for household members, assign devices to them, and manage screen time and device limits. The platform can be set to operate in three different modes.
