Centauri Carbon gets custom firmware with SSH and mid-print file uploads

Owners of the Centauri Carbon 3D printer can now replace the stock firmware with alternative builds that expand the device's capabilities. Enthusiasts have released two packages: a patched version of the original software and a fully custom build based on Klipper. According to users, both firmware options run reliably and hold their own against the factory software.

The patched firmware from the OpenCentauri project adds several useful features. These include SSH access over Wi-Fi, which simplifies diagnosing critical failures. The update also fixes an issue where the printer rejected new G-code files while it was already executing a job. This is especially relevant for long operations lasting more than 24 hours. Additionally, the build removes the Store redirect from the web interface and opens an API for checking filament usage.

The second build, called COSMOS, offers a complete firmware replacement using Klipper. It targets users who want deeper control over the machine. Developers note that the community has not recorded any cases of warranty service being denied after installing custom firmware, but risks remain, and users should weigh them before experimenting.

The author of the article tested both firmware versions for a week on the first-generation Centauri Carbon. He notes that the patched build retains most of the original UI elements, making the transition easier.
