Apple’s next CEO John Ternus may take bigger risks with AI glasses, robots, and acquisitions

Tim Cook is in his final weeks as Apple's CEO, with John Ternus set to take over on September 1. According to Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan, Ternus could usher in a bolder, more risk-tolerant era for the company.

In a research note seen by The Street, Mohan reiterated a strong "Buy" rating for Apple, citing expectations that Ternus will maintain Cook's legacy while also demonstrating a greater "risk appetite." The bank highlighted Apple's recent shift away from its net-cash-neutral objective as an early signal that management may be more willing to deploy capital. This could translate into heavier R&D spending, increased capital expenditures, and potentially larger acquisitions — areas that were not major features of Cook's strategy.

Under Ternus, BofA sees the possibility of Apple moving much more quickly into new product categories. The list includes AI glasses, camera-equipped AirPods, smart rings, home automation systems, personal assistants, and robotics. The analyst believes Ternus will leverage Apple's position of strength to make riskier moves in the future, while still preserving the company's core profitability.

The bank's note suggests that Ternus is expected to continue Cook's work of turning Apple into a highly efficient global profit machine, but with a more aggressive approach to innovation and capital allocation. However, major changes are unlikely to be visible immediately after Ternus assumes the role. The transition has been carefully managed by Apple to emphasize continuity, but Wall Street analysts are already anticipating a shift in strategic direction.
