STALKER 2's massive free 2.0 update moves the game to Unreal Engine 5 and arrives August 20

The rumors were true: GSC Game World has officially announced a massive free update 2.0, dubbed Back to the Zone, for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The patch launches on August 20, the same day as the first paid expansion, Cost of Hope.
Patch 2.0 is being billed as the most significant overhaul of the game's visuals and technical foundation since its release. The project is moving to an updated version of Unreal Engine 5. The developers have substantially reworked lighting and exposure, particularly indoors — light now realistically filters through vegetation, small gaps, and holes in structures. Foliage and terrain have been improved, and two new weather conditions, fog and light rain, have been added. The Bloodsuckers have also received a creepier appearance.
The A-Life 2.0 simulation has been upgraded with more points of interest, including campfires and bus stops, where stalkers and mutants can clash and interact with each other. The Zone is now noticeably more populated, forcing players to constantly scan their surroundings for potential threats.
In addition, the update introduces flexible game settings, letting players tailor the experience to be either more hardcore or more comfortable. The studio positioned the patch as a major step in evolving the open-world sandbox, promising that the revised lighting and denser world will change how familiar locations feel. The update is free for all owners of the base game.
