African defense startup Terra raises $52M to challenge Western, Turkish and Chinese suppliers

African defense technology company Terra Industries has closed a $52 million seed round, adding $18 million to previously announced funding. The round includes investments from Joe Lonsdale's 8VC, Silent Ventures, and Nova Global.

Launched in 2024, Terra has quickly become one of the most prominent names in the African defense tech space. The company focuses on building autonomous systems, drones, and mine-detecting combat vehicles. Terra says it is on track to secure $100 million in contracts — including at least one federal contract — and generate tens of millions of dollars in revenue by the end of the year.

Earlier this year, the startup announced back-to-back funding rounds of $11.75 million and $22 million, respectively. 8VC is also a backer of U.S. defense heavyweight Anduril, which is reportedly in talks to raise funding at a $100 billion valuation, as well as Shield AI.

Terra identifies its competition as any defense company that has won government contracts, particularly suppliers from Turkey, China, and the West. As TechCrunch previously reported, although terrorism remains one of Africa's biggest threats, many countries on the continent rely on the West, Russia, or China for security intelligence. These nations often work with numerous international contractors, resulting in fragmented and easily destabilized defense supply chains.

Terra aims to solve this by becoming the dominant player in the ecosystem for equipping countries with military and critical defense infrastructure. The startup will use the fresh capital to scale production and expand its team. The company says it is already in advanced discussions with several governments in the Global South, seeking to offer integrated defense solutions that reduce dependency on foreign suppliers. Terra's approach emphasizes local manufacturing and maintenance capabilities, which it claims will provide faster response times and greater operational security for client nations. The startup also plans to invest in research and development for next-generation autonomous systems tailored to the specific terrain and threat profiles of the region.
