$9 co-op horror Grain Rot hits 88% positive reviews on Steam, and it's surprisingly deep
The indie horror Grain Rot, which launched on Steam on August 7, has already racked up hundreds of player reviews in just a few days: 88% of 731 purchasers rated it positively, earning the game a Very Positive overall score. Despite a name that sounds like brainrot, the project turns out to be unexpectedly deep.
The developers describe Grain Rot as a co-op extraction builder set in a scorched wasteland. Players descend into procedurally shifting underground ruins, scavenge whatever they can, and try to make it back to the surface before the creatures lurking there end the expedition. Anything successfully hauled out is then used to rebuild and upgrade a persistent Outpost.
Players control a "Living Spark" that inhabits fragile wooden bodies called vessels. Having one smashed doesn't necessarily end a run — the Spark escapes and can search for another vessel to possess. Different hosts come with different abilities, while venturing deeper underground also introduces corruption and mutations.
Co-op is where Grain Rot truly shines. Physics-driven interactions let you dropkick enemies out of position, or go further and launch a friend's Spark out of its body or leave someone trapped with a monster. Furniture isn't just for decorating the Outpost either: it can be used to barricade areas or broken down for resources.
The game had already drawn considerable attention before launch. Developers say its demo was downloaded over 350,000 times, making it one of the 15 most-played demos during Steam Next Fest. By mid-July, it was approaching 200,000 wishlists.
Grain Rot is currently available with a 10% launch discount until August 21, bringing the price down to $9. Steam lists modest system requirements: a GTX 970 or Radeon R9 390 and 8 GB of RAM as minimum. The recommended spec bumps the GPU to an RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 5700, and the game takes only 10 GB of storage.
Steam Deck compatibility isn't official yet. Given the game's light hardware demands, though, raw performance is unlikely to be the biggest hurdle to getting Grain Rot running on Valve's handheld.
