Ganondorf actor signs multi-picture deal, suggesting The Legend of Zelda will get sequels

The crew behind The Legend of Zelda movie is preparing for a full series of films rather than a single project. Australian actor Uli Latukefu has signed a multi-picture agreement to play the villain Ganondorf, as reported by Deadline. Nintendo has not officially confirmed plans for sequels, but this move significantly speeds up production of follow-ups should the first film succeed.

Link will be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, while Bo Bragason takes on the role of Princess Zelda. The plot remains under wraps, though insiders believe it will draw from several games in the franchise rather than a single entry. Breath of the Wild and Twilight Princess are named as likely sources of inspiration, though references to Ocarina of Time are also possible — a remake of that game is due on Switch 2 in 2026.

Nintendo has already used this approach with the Super Mario movie: its story was original but built on elements from various games in the franchise. Producer Shigeru Miyamoto has previously stressed that the film format reaches audiences that Switch and Switch 2 consoles cannot. The company is also expanding its brands through theme parks and merchandising.

The film is scheduled for release in April 2027. It is currently in post-production, which makes the announced date realistic. In addition to Latukefu, the cast may include Yvonne Strahovski and Dichen Lachman, as well as the late Sam Neill — this could be his final appearance on the big screen. Fans believe the wave of casting news points to an imminent trailer reveal.
