World's largest battery-electric plane completes first flight — 27 minutes on $5 of power

Heart Aerospace has announced the successful maiden flight of its X1 demonstrator, the largest battery-electric aircraft ever built. The prototype took off from Plattsburgh International Airport in Upstate New York and remained airborne for 27 minutes, climbing to an altitude of 1,100 feet while running exclusively on its batteries.
The company highlighted that the entire flight, including takeoff and landing, consumed less than $5 worth of electricity — a striking contrast to the cost of jet fuel. The achievement has already drawn praise from executives at United Airlines and Air Canada, both of which are evaluating the possibility of adding electric aircraft to their fleets.
If the program proceeds as planned, the X1 will pave the way for the ES-30, a fixed-wing 30-seat hybrid aircraft designed to serve regional airports. Heart Aerospace hopes its planes can deliver a far cheaper alternative for short-haul "hopper" routes currently operated by turboprop aircraft such as the Embraer ERJ. The company is targeting an all-electric range of 125 miles, with that figure extending to 500 miles when the hybrid engine is engaged.
Heart's broader pitch goes beyond the simple cost advantage of electricity versus kerosene. The company argues that electric motors offer lower maintenance and operating expenses, as well as greater reliability, all of which should strengthen the business case for regional carriers. Looking further ahead, Heart believes the ES-30, while initially flown by a single pilot, could eventually support autonomous operations.
The company is currently aiming to bring the ES-30 into commercial service within the next few years.
