Wine 11.16 brings hardware video decoding via VA-API — but only for H.264

Wine 11.16 has been released as the latest bi-weekly development build of the compatibility layer that enables Windows applications and games to run on Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.

The standout feature in Wine 11.16 is the implementation of hardware-accelerated video decoding using the Video Acceleration API (VA-API). The code, authored by Elizabeth Figura of CodeWeavers, introduces a VA-API backend for Direct3D video decoding. Specifically, it integrates H.264 decoding into WineD3D and plumbs the necessary VA-API support throughout the WineD3D stack. However, in its current form, the implementation is limited to the H.264 codec only — H.265 and other formats are not yet supported.

On the ARM front, Wine 11.16 brings notable improvements. The updated Wine Mono engine now supports 64-bit ARM architecture, expanding compatibility for .NET applications. Additionally, exception handling on ARM64EC has been enhanced, making the layer more robust for Windows-on-Arm scenarios.

The release also addresses 35 known bugs. These fixes benefit a range of software, including games like Command and Conquer 3, the Steam client, and applications such as Siemens Automation and the regedit utility. A Wayland-related fix improves handling of the $WAYLAND_DISPLAY environment variable, which should result in smoother display management under Wayland sessions.

Wine 11.16 is available for download from WineHQ.org. It represents another step toward the stable Wine 12.0 release, continuing the project's tradition of bi-weekly development snapshots. Developers and enthusiasts are encouraged to test the new features, particularly the VA-API hardware decoding, and report any issues found.
