This Oblivion mod adds an entire Khajiit province, and it's still worth playing

The author of this piece describes returning to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, but not for the original game's story. Their Khajiit character, who already climbed to the top of Cyrodiil's Thieves Guild and became the Grey Fox, is now starting over from scratch in a brand-new guild based in the modded territory of Elsweyr.
The mod in question is Elsweyr the Deserts of Anequina, which adds an entire region populated by Khajiit to the game. The author first wrote about it in issue #340 of PC Gamer magazine (UK, February 2020), and notes that the project has aged remarkably well.
What makes this mod special, the author argues, is the classic "screw it, why not?" energy of Elder Scrolls modding. Bethesda only ever hinted at Elsweyr through in-game books and dialogue, leaving the province's full depiction to the imagination. Rather than wait for the studio to eventually explore the Khajiit homeland, modders built their own version of it — complete with new guilds, quests, and territory to explore.
The article also touches on the familiar Oblivion experience, describing how the author accidentally wore the Grey Fox mask, instantly marking their character as a wanted criminal to every guard. A shopkeeper then refused to go to bed and followed the player around, trying to kick them out of the store at midnight. These chaotic, memorable moments are exactly what makes returning to Oblivion with new content feel so rewarding.
The piece highlights how modders pick up loose lore threads that developers leave behind and turn them into fully realized game areas. Wherever game developers drop hints of a place, modders are sure to pick it up and expand upon it. For fans of the Khajiit and their homeland, Elsweyr the Deserts of Anequina stands as a testament to the enduring creativity of the Elder Scrolls modding community — and a reminder that sometimes the best content comes from the players themselves.
