Tank 5 Pro brings FLIR thermal camera, projector, and Dimensity 9400e to rugged phones

8849tech has unveiled the Tank 5 Pro, a rugged smartphone that builds on the standard Tank 5 introduced in June. The key upgrade is a FLIR thermal imaging camera, which costs an additional $200 over the base model. The thermal sensor has a resolution of 160 by 120 pixels and overlays the heat map onto a feed from a regular camera to produce a sharper preview. It can measure temperatures from –10 °C to +400 °C.

Beyond the thermal camera, the Tank 5 Pro retains the same unusual feature set as the Tank 5. It includes a 220-lumen DLP projector with 1080p resolution, a dedicated 50-megapixel night vision camera backed by four infrared LEDs, and a large camping light on the rear panel. For conventional photography, the phone offers a 50 MP main camera, a 50 MP telephoto lens, and a 32 MP selfie camera.

The display is a 6.73-inch AMOLED panel with 3,200 by 1,440 pixel resolution, a peak HDR brightness of 3,000 nits, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Unlike many outdoor-focused rugged devices, the Tank 5 Pro does not compromise on performance. It is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9400e chipset, paired with 18 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage.

The phone's dimensions reflect its rugged nature: it measures 33.8 mm in thickness and weighs 715 grams, making it heavier and thicker than four stacked iPhone 17 units. The trade-off is a massive 17,600 mAh battery, which supports extended usage in the field. The device is positioned as a niche product for users who need extreme durability, thermal imaging, and a built-in projector in a single handheld device.
