Stripe to acquire OpenRouter for over $7 billion — 8 million developers use the AI platform with 400 models

Stripe, the payments giant, is close to acquiring OpenRouter, a platform that provides access to hundreds of artificial intelligence models, for more than $7 billion, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
According to the publication, Stripe and OpenRouter have already reached a deal, though the final price could still change. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the parties were negotiating a deal worth approximately $10 billion.
OpenRouter was founded in 2023. The platform aggregates over 400 AI models from various developers, allowing users to work with them and switch between them seamlessly. Key features include backup access in case of a model failure and analytics on how different models are used across the tech industry. In May, the startup said its service was used by about 8 million developers.
The company has raised more than $150 million in investments from prominent venture capital firms, including CapitalG, Andreessen Horowitz, and Menlo Ventures. Earlier this year, OpenRouter was valued at roughly $1.3 billion following its latest funding round.
OpenRouter's founder and CEO is Alex Atallah, who previously co-founded the NFT marketplace OpenSea. He left that company in 2022.
