Sony’s new $400 turntable doubles the price of its predecessor — and buyers are not happy

Sony has introduced the PS-LX3BT, a new entry-level turntable and its first new model in years. The device succeeds the popular PS-LX310BT released in 2019 and shares a similar design, but comes with a significantly higher price tag.

The PS-LX3BT launched on February 2, 2026, at a starting price of $399.99 (approximately £299 or 469 AUD). By comparison, its predecessor was priced at $199 (about £200 or 399 AUD) at launch. This doubling of the entry price has raised eyebrows among potential buyers, especially given that the new model retains a plastic chassis and makes stylus replacement difficult — two of the main criticisms leveled at the device.

Despite these drawbacks, the PS-LX3BT offers a fully automatic operation, a built-in phono preamp, and reliable Bluetooth connectivity. Early reviews note that the sound quality is respectable for an entry-level turntable, making it a solid option for casual listeners who prioritize convenience.

However, the competition in this price bracket is fierce. The Audio-Technica AT-LP70XBT, for instance, offers similar features at a comparable price point. Sony also announced a higher-end variant, the PS-LX5BT, alongside the PS-LX3BT. The PS-LX5BT upgrades the rubber mat, reduces the tracking force to 2.0 grams, adds gold-plated connectors, and improves vibration isolation — addressing some of the shortcomings found in the cheaper model.

The PS-LX310BT, which remains available in some markets, still offers a more affordable entry point into vinyl playback, making the new model's pricing strategy a point of debate among enthusiasts.
