Sony's $289 WH-1000XM4C leaks as a reboot of its 2020 flagship headphones

Sony is preparing to launch new over-ear Bluetooth headphones, the WH-1000XM4C, which according to a fresh leak will be an updated take on the XM4 model introduced back in 2020. The expected price is $289.08, notably lower than the anniversary-edition 1000X 'The Collexion' series priced at $650, which the company released earlier this year.

The debut is rumored for September 7, 2026. The headphones will reportedly come in three color options: lavender, platinum silver, and black. The device is said to retain the core features of the original XM4, including the QN1 HD noise-canceling processor, multipoint Bluetooth connectivity, and personalized spatial audio.

One potential difference is battery life: up to 34 hours with active noise canceling turned off, slightly less than its predecessor. The full spec sheet has not been disclosed in the leak, so exact details remain uncertain.

Analysts doubt the XM4C will appeal to those unwilling to wait for a refreshed six-year-old model. As an alternative, the XM5, launched in 2022, is currently available with a 38% discount and offers upgraded active noise canceling and sound quality. Still, the XM4C could find its niche if Sony officially discontinues the original XM4, allowing the new model to take its place in the lineup.
