Slow wireless charging? Your phone case might be the culprit — here's what to pick

Slow wireless charging is often caused by an unsuitable phone case rather than a faulty device. Inductive power transfer is sensitive to materials and thickness, so not every accessory lets a smartphone charge at its rated speed.

The technology dates back to 2009, when the Palm Pre used a magnetic stand to align its charging coils — an idea that resurfaced 11 years later with MagSafe on the iPhone 12. In 2012, the Nokia Lumia 920 became the first phone with the Wireless Power Consortium's Qi standard, which remains dominant today. The Samsung Galaxy S3 later gained wireless charging via a separate accessory, while the LG-made Google Nexus 4 was the first Android phone to ship with Qi out of the box. The iPhone 8 brought wireless charging to Apple's lineup in 2017, giving the tech a significant boost.

The issue is that wireless power transfer is inefficient: energy passes through the phone's backplate and the charger's casing rather than a metal-to-metal contact, leading to losses and excess heat. Cases not designed for induction charging amplify these problems, causing inconsistent connections and slower speeds. Yet skipping a case entirely isn't necessary — the right accessory can work perfectly with Qi.

Key factors are thickness and material. Thin plastic or silicone cases typically don't interfere, while bulky rugged bumpers with metal inserts or thick rubber layers can block the field. Metal cases almost completely shield the signal and should be avoided. MagSafe compatibility also matters: magnets in the case help align the coils precisely, which is especially important for iPhones.

Testing is straightforward: place the phone in its case on a charging pad and check whether the indicator appears and how quickly the battery level rises. If charging is slower than usual or keeps cutting out, the case is likely at fault. In that case, switch to a thinner model or one specifically certified for wireless charging.
