Reddit turns text posts into three-minute TikTok-style videos with AI voiceover and word highlighting

Reddit has announced a new experimental feature that transforms text posts and selected comments into audio and video versions. The testing began on August 17 on the web version and became available on iOS and Android apps starting August 18. Instead of reading, users can press the "Play" button to watch a three-minute vertical video styled like a TikTok clip, with highlighted words appearing as they are spoken.

The feature voices not only the original post but also selected comments. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman first hinted at this direction during an investor call in July. He noted that a new type of content is emerging on the internet — essentially podcasts where people read Reddit posts aloud — and that a listenable version of Reddit could be very engaging.

Currently, the tests are limited to English-language posts manually selected from a small number of subreddits. The company emphasizes that the original text and comments remain fully available — users choose whether to read or watch a post. The videos use multi-voice speech synthesis, subtitles, and visual templates. Each clip is labeled with "Real conversation voiced by AI" to ensure users are aware of the artificial origin of the audio.
