Polaroid puts Pikachu on a $100 instant camera — nostalgia sells better than tech

Polaroid has announced a limited-edition collection of instant cameras themed around Pokémon, timed to the franchise's 30th anniversary. The lineup includes a bright yellow Polaroid Go Generation 3 featuring Pikachu, priced at $100. It comes with a hand strap shaped like Pikachu's lightning-bolt tail.

Two other models are also available. A Sylveon-themed camera in pink, white, and blue costs the same $100 — Sylveon first appeared in Pokémon X and Y back in 2013. The third and largest model is a $140 Polaroid Now Generation 3 designed to look like a Poké Ball. All three cameras share Poké Ball-shaped shutter buttons, reinforcing the Pokémon theme.

Technically, these are the same existing Polaroid cameras with no new features or hardware improvements. The company is banking entirely on character recognition and nostalgia rather than technological innovation. The strategy targets adults who grew up with Pokémon and still engage with the franchise through games, trading cards, and community events.

The collection celebrates Pokémon's 30th anniversary, which began in 1996 with the release of Pokémon Red and Green for the Game Boy. Since then, Pokémon has grown into one of the world's most profitable media franchises, spanning video games, anime, movies, a trading card game, and massive merchandise sales.

Polaroid's approach mirrors a broader trend in consumer electronics: leveraging established intellectual property to sell otherwise standard products at a premium. The cameras are available now, but as a limited edition, they may not stay in stock long.
