PlayStation Portal glitch blocks access to purchased games, Sony blames technical issue

PlayStation Portal owners suddenly lost access to cloud streaming of purchased digital PS5 games. The incident, which began around August 7, affected popular titles including Ghost of Yōtei, The Binding of Isaac, Oblivion Remastered, and Madden NFL 27. When launching a game, the handheld console displayed an error saying the title was no longer available for streaming.

PlayStation Lifestyle reported that complaints began flooding Reddit over the weekend. User GAME_ANALYTICA highlighted an error that appeared when trying to play The Binding of Isaac. Meanwhile, owners using Remote Play with a PS5 console experienced no issues — the outage was limited to cloud streaming.

Contacting Sony support only deepened the concern. One user, dingofromspace, was told that Ghost of Yōtei had been removed from the cloud streaming catalog. The company reminded that it does not guarantee indefinite availability of any title for this feature. However, Redditors found it strange that so many games disappeared simultaneously on a weekend without prior warning.

It later turned out that a technical glitch was the culprit. Several players updated their posts to confirm that their purchased games were playable again. Nevertheless, the incident raises further doubts about Sony's push toward full digital distribution.

Buyers chose the PlayStation Portal knowing it cannot boot games from local storage or physical media. But even the PS5 will become more vulnerable to network outages and marketplace issues soon: in early 2028, Sony plans to stop manufacturing Blu-ray discs for new releases. Critics argue that relying on servers for access to purchases threatens ownership rights.

The storage and memory shortage may also inflate the price of the PS6 and the rumored PS6 handheld. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently suggested cloud gaming as a solution to rising costs. Yet, the latest Portal problems show how susceptible streaming-oriented hardware is to glitches and downtime.
