Plasma 6.8 boots faster, uses less memory — beta lands in September

The KDE team has published the latest issue of "This Week in Plasma," detailing progress on the upcoming Plasma 6.8 desktop environment. Despite the summer holiday season, development remains active, with several new features and performance optimizations already in place.

The release schedule for Plasma 6.8 is as follows: soft code freeze on August 27, Beta 1 on September 10, Beta 2 on September 24, and the final stable release of Plasma 6.8.0 expected on October 14.

One long-requested addition is the ability to search System Settings pages using English keywords, even when the system is configured in another language. The search now recognizes English terms alongside the primary interface language, making navigation more accessible for multilingual users.

The lock screen has been improved with better button alignment and the ability to select authentication types. KWin notifications about GPU resets will now trigger for all GPUs in the system, not just the primary one.

The Breeze theme now features improved styling for GTK4 application menus and window borders, ensuring a more consistent visual experience across different toolkits.

On the performance front, KDE Discover's background notifier process will use "much less" memory when checking for updates. Plasma 6.8 will also start up slightly faster by avoiding unnecessary work during wallpaper loading. KWin's screenshot functionality is being accelerated, and screen recording on high-refresh-rate displays will be smoother.

In the KDE Frameworks department, version 6.30 introduces improved SVG caching, resulting in better speed and reduced video RAM usage. This optimization benefits applications that rely heavily on scalable vector graphics, making them more responsive and efficient.

The cumulative changes aim to deliver a more responsive and resource-efficient desktop experience, with particular attention to memory consumption and startup performance. The team continues to refine the codebase ahead of the first beta release in September.
